Professor Linda A. Macaulay

Linda Macaulay (B.Sc, M.Sc, PhD, CEng, Cert. Ed., FBCS*) Professor of System Design Manchester Business School (MBS) is twice holder of the prestigious IBM Faculty Award 2004 and 2006 for work in e-business patterns and a Fellow of the British Computer Society. She is Director of the Manchester Business School Centre for Service Research and Principal Investigator on the EPSRC funded SSME UK network project. In teaching she leads the MBS Second Life Virtual Academy project and is Programme Director for the B.Sc. IT Management for Business.

Her interests in Service Systems stem from research in e-Business and the realisation that business is moving away from the traditional single hierarchical organisation towards a network of business services enabled by the internet and increasingly by service-oriented architectures. Service in this context is viewed as an IT supported business process and the vision is for the formation of business service ecosystems that are capable of configuring themselves dynamically to meet a specific business opportunity.

In collaboration with Dr Zhao in the School of Computer Science and partners from IBM, BT and HP Professor Macaulay founded the UK network in Service Science Management and Engineering (SSME) in 2007. The aim of the EPSRC funded network is to bring together academics across the UK to pioneer this new field by developing a shared understanding of goals and opportunities for research, education, and practice around the SSME agenda. The network has over 100 members from around 60 different organisations.
See http://www.ssmenetuk.org for further details.

Professor Macaulay took the lead in forming the Manchester Business School (MBS) Centre for Service Research in July 2008, the centre brings together almost 30 full time academic staff within MBS and the School of Computer Science who are conducting research related to innovation and service systems. The challenge for the Centre is to draw staff from their "silo" disciplines into this newly emerging discipline. See http://www.mbs.ac.uk/research/csr/index.aspx.
